PVC-specific compositions and applications

PVC or polyvinylchloride is a plastic material, produced by combining chlorine, obtained from the electrolysis of salt water, with ethylene derived from petroleum, thus forming the vinyl chloride monomer (CVM). This monomer is then polymerised to form the PVC resin, a white powder mixed with additives that provide PVC with its distinctive and main characteristics.

During the last PVC Academy on 28 June 2023, Plastic Consult conducted a market survey on behalf of PVC Forum Italia, revealing that 586,000 tons of virgin PVC were used in Italy in 2022. Of these, half consisted of rigid PVC and the other half of plasticised PVC. 67% of the total is represented by PVC resin, while the remaining 33% is by compound.
The analysis of the breakdown of PVC consumption by application sector in 2022 reveals the great versatility of this material, widely used in a variety of industrial sectors. Construction remains the main sector of use of PVC, with a market share of almost 35%.
Packaging follows, which recorded a use of 65,000 tons of PVC.

Properties and efficiency of PVC

PVC is generally in a liquid state before being solidified through heating, which provides the material with a certain compactness. As a result, it stands out for a series of unique characteristics that make it an incredibly versatile material, suitable for a wide range of applications:

  • Stability and strength: PVC offers reliable protection thanks to its impermeability to liquids, gases and vapours, making it ideal for packaging and for protection from moisture, corrosion, scratches and external environmental conditions. Its stability and chemical resistance make it a preferred choice in sectors where mechanical and chemical stresses are a constant to be avoided or prevented.
  • Longevity: PVC products are known for their exceptional durability over time, famously lasting for decades in applications such as coating copper electrical cables, pipes and drainage systems, various types of packaging, including food packaging, flooring, and much more.
  • Safety: due to its resistance in many conditions, such as exposure to chemicals and its insulating properties, PVC is widely used, offering a higher level of safety and protection.
  • Cost-effectiveness: with an excellent cost/performance ratio, PVC stands out for its convenience and efficiency as one of the most cost-effective plastic materials, thus representing a financially convenient choice for many applications.
  • Environment: with low energy consumption and reduced environmental impact, PVC is committed to supporting responsible management of natural resources, helping to promote environmental sustainability.
Is PVC really a sustainable material?

In order for a material to be considered sustainable, it must meet the requirements for preserving environmental resources while also providing benefits that prevent the waste of energy or environmental resources in the medium to long term.
This implies adopting a technological and industrial development strategy that considers environmental conditions and compatibility during resource extraction and use, as well as in production techniques.

On the one hand, PVC has some significant environmental advantages.
It is lightweight, resistant, durable and can also be recycled. Moreover, it is produced with low energy consumption and can be made with a significant amount of recycled material. Indeed, PVC is highly recyclable thanks to its chlorine component, which facilitates separation from other plastics during separate collection and allows its reuse in a higher percentage when  compared to other materials. Mechanical recycling operations are simple and do not significantly impact the environment. Once separated and treated, recycled PVC retains its physical and chemical properties, making it a material suitable for a wide range of applications.

Therefore, PVC shows a considerable advantage in total energy consumption and CO2 emissions, representing thus an effective and sustainable choice.

At the same time, it’s important to seriously address concerns regarding the sustainability of PVC, as not all types or uses of this material are beneficial to the planet.

The production of this material often involves the use of harmful and toxic chemicals, such as chlorine and vinyl ethyl chloride, which can be detrimental to human health and the environment. Moreover, since PVC is not biodegradable, it can persist in the environment for long periods even after being disposed of and therefore, should only be used in durable product sand not in objects with a short life cycle, such as food packaging destined to be thrown away immediately after consumption.

R.P. Rivestimenti Plastici has significantly extended the lifecycle of PVC-coated metal products by offering complementary and integrated services to its clients. Internally, we also handle the removal of obsolete material without damaging or deforming the item; this allows for cost savings in the production of the metal object, which will simply be revitalised and regenerated with a new layer of virgin plastic material.

To promote more sustainable production, efforts must continue to be made to minimise the environmental impact of PVC production in disposable items. This can be achieved through the adoption of more environmentally friendly production practices and the use of more energy efficient technologies. In addition, promoting the responsible use of additives in the PVC production process is essential, ensuring that they are used and chosen with extreme care.
At the same time, supporting PVC collection and recycling programmes can significantly contribute to reducing its overall environmental impact. Moreover, it’s crucial to encourage open and constructive dialogue between all parties involved in the PVC sector, including producers, consumers, environmental organisations and government agencies that can take action to better manage its use.

Only through collaboration and a multifaceted approach will it be possible to effectively address the challenges related to the sustainability of PVC and work together to truly develop innovative and sustainable solutions!

The revolution towards a sustainable future for PVC

Despite the challenges, it’s important to highlight the growing commitment towards an increasingly conscious and sustainable production of PVC to ensure that it is used more correctly and appropriately.
In this context, VinylPlus® emerges as the initiative of the European PVC industry to promote a more sustainable development, aimed at improving the sustainability and circularity of PVC products and thus contributing to an eco-friendlier society.

VinylPlus® is at the forefront of proactively supporting technical projects, research, and innovation to improve current collection and recycling schemes and to establish new ones for additional PVC streams. In fact, their recycling target and approach towards a circular economy aims to achieve the recycling of 900,000 tons of PVC by 2025, with the goal of growing to one million tons of recycled PVC per year by 2030.
This commitment includes supporting the development of chemical recycling and other recycling and sorting technologies, as well as finding solutions to identify, separate and remove chemical additives from end-of-life PVC products.
